Dear Jean and Fatima,

First of all, thank you very much for your continued financial support in many of our water projects in Peru.
With this letter, we come to ask once more your financial support for a new project, this time for a water catchment and distribution system in the village of Rio Seco in Peru. The project will include a new catchment system, a reservoir, a network of distribution, home connections and a sink for each family.

1. Area: Rio Seco, district of Supe, province of Barranca, department of Lima. Distance of Lima: 200km

2. Population: 81 families / 400 inhabitants + 5 public locals. Rio Seco’s community was formed in the 1970s after the construction, by the Central Government, of a canal to irrigate all the valley of Supe. The majority of inhabitants come from different provinces of the Andes.

3. Subsistence: The inhabitants live off their little agriculture and raising of cows, chickens, cuyes, etc. They sell their surplus to the markets of Supe and Barranca.

4. The problem: The unexpected floodings caused by the Niño Costero in March of 2017 have completely destroyed the village and its crops. The avalanches that have hit the valley thrice  have  left mud pools of a meter high in the center of the village. The water supplying system is ruined. The community took the decision to relocate on a higher ground closer to the mountain. The Municipality of Supe has brought its support for the division of the lands and its inscription to the owners. Since last March, a water truck brings a minimal amount of water to the community and the Rotary Club of Barranca has given the most necessary goods.

5. Public services: A new road has been constructed all along the valley and the electricity network has been restored. The people have access to cellular phoning. There is no school in Rio Seco; the students go to other villages.

6. The goal of the project: It is obviously to improve the inhabitants’ hygiene and health and to render their lives easier, especially for women. Also, access to clean water permits for all to restore their dignity.

7. Sustainability: A clean water committee has already been formed and the community accepts to provide all the non-qualified workforce which represents, partly, hundreds of hours of work only for digging long trenches to install pipes. Numerous meetings are planned with the committee and the whole community to teach them how to use the water adequately and to talk about hygiene. Two operators chosen by the community will be formed for the adequate maintenance of the system. A contract has been signed in the past December between the community, the Municipality of the District of Supe and Alas de Esperanza Perú.

8. Financing cost: The total cost of the project is of $132,200; however, 46% of the budget represents the workforce and the few materials provided by the community and/or the municipality. See the budget’s details. The necessary external help is of $ 71,400.

In the waiting of your decision, we remain your loyal humanitarian partners,

André Franche
