Dear Mr. Zalzal, Mr. Pugliese, Dr. Grenier and Ms. Langlois,

Health Partners International of Canada (HPIC) is a Canadian charity dedicated to increasing access to medicine and improving health for the world’s most vulnerable people. We receive product donations from Canada’s pharmaceutical industry and, through our network of Canadian volunteers and NGO partners, are able to treat about 1 million people in 50 countries every year. For a few years now, HPIC has worked on a Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) project in Malawi with Working for Orphans and Widows (WOW) Mission. The MotherCare Malawi project aims to bridge a critical gap for vulnerable women to access maternal and newborn healthcare by:
a) Delivering health education to mother groups,
b) Providing transport for mothers to access care at community clinics, and
c) Providing 16 HPIC Mother-Child Health (MCH) kits with essential birthing equipment and medicines to frontline health workers.
Each kit contains medications, vitamins, oral rehydration salts, prenatal and pediatric supplementsand medical supplies such as gloves, pads, gauze, and umbilical cord ties. It likewise includes basic equipment such as fetal stethoscopes, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, and infant scales.
The consumable contents in the 16 kits will provide care to up to 1,360 mothers and children while the equipment will allow health workers to provide care to women and children for years to come.
The project has been operating in 16 communities: Nadzuluwa, Mnkwanila, Chilombo, Matanda, Kudooko, Kasakula, Mandala, Mngwangwa, Kalimbula, Mtema Proper, Chimsinde, Kapunula,
Mtemankhalapadzuwa, Kawawa, Njande and Chikudzulire. A few communities will be added in 2018.
The goal is to send the kits in June 2018. The total cost of this project is CDN $8,000. We are requesting $4,000 from the Rotary Club of Montreal to cover all aspects of preparing the 16 MCH kits (soliciting product donations, assembling the kits, issuing documents for customs clearance) and for assessing results and reporting. WOW Mission will contribute the remaining $4,000 including the shipping costs.
In Malawi, the maternal mortality ratio is 510 per 100,000 live births - more than 46 times the ratio in Canada, while 43 infants of every 1,000 die at birth, compared to 4.5 in Canada. A major factor is delayed or no access to quality health services at birth. The majority of women in Malawi live in scattered villages and find it hard to reach health facilities. They also lack the information they need to make informed health decisions for themselves and their children. This project is relevant in that it responds to the significant health challenge of high maternal and infant mortality rates in Malawi.
It’s a sustainable project that takes a holistic approach to increase the health of mothers and their young children by providing health education to mothers, travel vouchers so they can access
health centers, and medical products and equipment for local health workers so they offer quality care to the mothers and their children. This combination of strategies empowers women to
understand, seek and receive health services during pregnancy and after delivery.
HPIC’s partner on this project is WOW Mission, a Canadian organization that brings healing to the most vulnerable persons living in communities affected by HIV, AIDS and poverty. WOW Mission staff travel regularly to monitor the project in Malawi. WOW also works with a local partner, Somebody Cares Ministries who has a staff person (Keta Ngosi) in charge of project implementation and monitoring.
We are hereby asking the Rotary Club of Montreal for a grant of $ 2,000.00 as well as the Fondation Louise Grenier and the Fondation Coup de Coeur for $ 1,000 each to subsidize up to 50% of the total project cost of $ 8,000.00.
We believe that the proposed project is a good fit with the Rotary Club of Montreal's mission and priorities, and we are hopeful that you will be able to support us.

Sincerely,
Maricarmen Raudales
Director, Programs, HPIC
